Williams defeated the Bates Bobcats 24-21.
The Only Stat That Matters
Bates compiled a slight advantage in many game statistics, including total yardage, rushing yardage, and time of possession. The Bobcats also had the day’s longest play from scrimmage, a 61-yard scamper by NESCAC leading rushing sophomore Ryan Linskey. The Ephs led in tackles for loss, penalty yardage and critically, the final score.
Managing Mistakes
While Williams played far from perfectly, the Ephs did eliminate many of the miscues that haunted them in games past. Williams committed only five penalties and yielded no turnovers and no sacks.
Getting Our Kicks
Eph special teams again had a strong day. Kicker Ivan Shuran booted a personal long 47-yarder to end the first half. In the end the margin of 3 was decisive. Shuran also added 3 of 3 PATs, and every kickoff was a touchback. Leonardo Maiuolo averaged 39 yards per punt. Late in the game, Leo picked up a difficult snap, wheeled around and booted the ball 35 yards downfield to keep the Bobcats at bay.
Jumbo Test
Next up are the Tufts Jumbos at Farley-Lamb field at 1:30pm on Saturday, October 26. Both Williams and Tufts are 4-2. The Jumbos’ losses came to Trinity and Middlebury, who are both 5-1. Tufts is led by senior quarterback Michael Berluti who is 2nd in NESCAC passing yards and 12th in rushing yards.
